Job Description
NAAM is a non-profit organization which provides social support services to refugees and immigrants residing on the North Shore and in the Lowell area. The core services include: ESOL classes, employment assistance and job coaching, skills training, case management, after-school and summer programming for youth and children K-12, citizenship assistance and civics/history classes.
The Employment Support Services Program supports individuals and families referred to NAAM by the Department of Transitional Assistance. Services include assistance with the job search, job preparedness, and help to non-native-English-speaking clients to overcome cultural, linguistic, and personal barriers in order to obtain a meaningful, sufficient, and rewarding work experience.
The part-time Adult ESOL Teacher will work with small groups of refugees and immigrants to improve their English proficiency, one of the main barriers that prevent individuals from obtaining and maintaining successful employment. This program runs on the Lowell, MA Public Schools calendar. Schedule is flexible, but classes are in-person, weekday mornings to early afternoons. This is the perfect job for an experienced teacher who wants to work while their kids are at school.
The Teacher will place specific emphasis on adult and parenting real-life situations, American culture and social norms, and employment success. Curriculum materials are available, or bring your own- creative flexibility is key!
The Teacher will provide three (3) levels of instruction, with a focus on literacy development in the first level, and active conversation practice for all students. Additional opportunities for remote and self-guided learning will be offered, as well as individual conferencing.
The Teacher will collaborate with Employment Specialist, Career Development Specialist, and Program Manager, and attend monthly staff meetings. This position will report to site ESSP Program Manager.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree, and 5+ years of teaching experience
- Speaks at least one additional language (preferably Spanish, Swahili, Dari/Pashto, Arabic, or Haitian
Creole)
- Computer proficient
- Comfortable with and valuing of diverse populations
- Interest in curriculum development
- Shares NAAMs mission to assist newly arriving refugees and immigrants with integration into
American society, to promote economic stability , to build bridges with the larger community, and to
foster the maintenance of refugees' and immigrants' cultural identities
