Job Description
The Custodian plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the school. This includes a variety of tasks that support the school¿s operations and environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cooperation with the Principal: The Custodian must work closely with the Principal to align
custodial duties with the school's needs, ensuring efficient operations.
2. Professional Conduct: The Custodian should always display courteous behavior when
interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
3. Custodial Supplies and Equipment: The Custodian should be knowledgeable about cleaning
supplies and specialized equipment, using them safely and efficiently.
4. Punctuality and Security: Timeliness is essential. The Custodian is also responsible for
securing the building at the end of the day, including checking doors, windows, and other
access points.
5. Building Maintenance: Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, and maintaining
cleanliness in hallways, classrooms, and common areas. Floors must be properly cared for
through waxing and buffing.
6. Washroom Maintenance: The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting
restrooms, maintaining soap and towel dispensers, and ensuring all fixtures are functional.
7. Handyman Repairs: Minor repairs such as fixing door jams, replacing light bulbs, and
addressing plumbing issues are part of the Custodian¿s role.
8. Heating and Ventilation: The Custodian must ensure the building's heating and ventilation
systems operate effectively, adhering to safety guidelines.
9. Outdoor Grounds: The Custodian is responsible for keeping the school grounds clean,
including snow removal and maintaining safe walkways during winter.
10. Safeguarding Property: The Custodian must report any damages or misuse of school
property to the Principal.
11. Supervision of Special Areas: The Custodian assists in maintaining cleanliness in areas like
the lunchroom and restrooms.
12. Record Keeping: Accurate records of supplies, maintenance, and repairs must be kept.
13. Flag Display: The Custodian ensures proper display and care of the U.S. flag.
14. Storage Room Organization: Custodial storage areas must be kept clean and well-organized.
15. Fire and Safety Procedures: The Custodian should be trained in fire prevention and
emergency procedures, including the proper use of fire extinguishers.
